To celebrate the 114th International Women’s Day, which falls on March 8, the needlework venue of China National Silk Museum launches a theme event featuring Dunhuang patterns. The creative art event aims to offer the general public a chance to feel the beauty of fine traditional Chinese culture and spend an International Women’s Day typical of Chinese charms.

According to China National Silk Museum, Patterns of the New Year, a theatrical program for the Spring Festival Gala for the Year of the Dragon, combined melodies and stage arts and shown traditional Chinese patterns to the audiences. “Traditional patterns offer people with a chance to feel the profundity of history and warmth of sensibility.” The artistic consultant of the program is Chang Sha’na, daughter of Chang Shuhong, reputed as “the guardian of Dunhuang.”

In 2012, Chang Sha’na donated the manuscripts of around 400 Dunhuang decorative patterns to China National Silk Museum. The event will feature DIY artworks and art experience activities on Dunhuang patterns. Participants can experience the beauty of traditional Chinese patterns and the charm of Dunhuang art.

The DIY artworks will be held in various forms. Teachers will give lectures on abstracting Dunhuang patterns from Chang Sha’na’s works and gluing them on moon-shaped fans. There will also be parent-child activities. Participating families can choose patterns they like and create their own artworks.
