Located in the northwest of West Lake, the scene is famous for the lake view and lotus view. According to records, there was an imperial winery by the Hongchun Bridge in the Song Dynasty (960-1279). When the warm breeze blew in summer, the intoxicating fragrance of lotus and wine would fill the air, hence the name "Lotus Breeze by the Winery". In the Qing Dynasty, the winery was closed. When Emperor Kangxi of Qing Dynasty visited the Lake, he renamed the scene as “Breeze-ruffled Lotus at Quyuan Garden”.
Today, the scenic area has been expanded and has become a large garden with an area of over 420 mu (28 hectares) featuring cultures around lotus and wine. The garden consists of five scenic spots, namely Yuehu Lake, Bamboo Garden, Lotus in the Breeze, Quyuan Garden and Lakeside Forest. The pavilions, terraces, buildings and towers laid out in the garden form an elegant picture. The lotus pond covers an area of about 38 mu (over 2.5 hectares), planted with rare and valuable lotus cultivars such as red lotus, white lotus, double-bloom lotus, yellow lotus and lotus with two flowers on one stalk. It has become an ideal destination to view lotus in China.
