A campaign centered around the protection of rare and old trees with historical significance was called and initiated by Lingyin Office of the city’s West Lake Administration. The  Flying Peak was the chosen site for the event.

The 10 rare and old trees in this campaign are divided into three classes. The event kicked off under a Chinquapin tree, one of the “Top 10 Rare and Old Trees.” Certificates in recognition of the adoption of Chinquapin, Sweetgum, and Mongolian Oak were presented by the local gardening authority to individual citizens and their families. The commitment was later secured by erecting nameplates, watering the trees, spreading pine bark mulch around them, and hugging them for pictures. Seeds were also planted by kids, who drew innocent pictures calling everyone to save our planet.

The campaign also featured, for the first time, a “mobile classroom.” People came to the Flying Peak to gain knowledge on the construction of the Old Tree Park for the local Mongolian Oaks and how to protect them. They tried the smart monitoring system that helps save our landscape with high technologies, and also visited a photo exhibition for a better understanding of what’s behind the peak and its association with such old, rare trees. Gardening technicians also granted an on-site lecture on the pruning techniques for osmanthus trees. They all provided an “immersive” experience on our old conventions and what problems they are being confronted with nowadays. It was a class that substantially helps with the public awareness.

An initiative on protecting old, rare trees was also handed out by foreign volunteers on the street, calling for the public to save our home, our nature, and our planet. The West Lake is second to none.
